25% Use Just Their Mobile Phone
02/07/2008
A European Commission survey in to the use of telephones has reported that 25% of households now solely use a mobile phone for their communication needs and have turned their backs on the conventional landline telephone.
The staggering statistic was largely bolstered by the figures produced from ex-communist states (which came in at almost 40% sole mobile phone utilisation), although this is largely due to ageing fixed line networks which are more costly to upgrade than cellular site investment for mobile telecoms, so government investment in these areas has primarily been in the later arena.
Where the mobile/landline split was most definitive however was in Finland, home of global handset market leader Nokia, where 61% of people use only a mobile phone for their communication needs.
"Mobile data services are the future and we in Europe were the first to roll them out," EU Telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reding said.

Sony Ericsson Announces Poor Results
01/07/2008
Mobile handset manufacturer Sony Ericsson has warned it is likely to just break even in its second quarter figures for 2008 as profits fall almost 50%.
The company sites lower than expected demand for its mid to high-tier handsets due to the current consumer outlook on the global financial situation. Earlier in the month Sony Ericsson announced that it was to cancel the ‘P5’ which was a new smartphone slider it had been developing. At the time the reason for the P5 not making it to production was that its specifications were not strong enough to allow it to hold its weight against competing devices, but this latest news presents an alternate possibility for the abrupt cancellation in to development of the P5.
While life is nowhere near as gloomy as for those in the Motorola camp, there are some similarities in terms of poor handset strategy, with Sony Ericsson being criticised for focussing too much on its ‘Walkman’ branded handsets.
A year ago Sony Ericsson reported profits of £175m, but this is now the company’s second consecutive dismal quarter, a far cry from previous years. The company has also lost ground on its competitors and currently sits in fifth place (having been overtaken by relative newcomer LG).
