The Windows Mobile platform

One of the difficulties with deploying Exchange Direct Push is that each device is slightly different. While Microsoft have written the operating system, each device manufacturer is allowed to tweak the user interface slightly. From a technical support perspective this can make looking after your users’ a difficult task so we would always advise only deploying one or two specific devices to your user base.

Windows Mobile 6

Windows Mobile 6 is the latest version of the Windows Mobile platform, first announced at the 3GSM World Congress in February 2007. Windows Mobile 6 has three versions:

Windows Mobile 6 Standard - this is designed for smart phones without touch screens. These devices can view documents but have no editing capabilities.

Windows Mobile 6 Professional - Windows Mobile 6 Standard - this is designed for PDA's with phone functionality (formally known as Pocket PC Phone Edition). These devices carry 'Office Mobile', a suite of applications for creating and editing Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents.

Windows Mobile 6 Classic - this version is designed for PDA's which have no cellular phone capabilities and as a result airtime manager tend not to deal with this version.

Windows Mobile 6 has several advantages over version 5, most notably the ability to view HTML email and Windows Update capabilities without the need to connect the device to a desktop computer to perform software upgrades. The majority of current Windows Mobile 5 devices will have the ability to update to the new version in the near future as an update path is released by the hardware manufacturers – this update is already available for some pre Windows Mobile 6 devices.

HTC Excalibur (S620)
HTC 620

Small, simple, stylish and cost effective, this is one of the best Windows Mobile 5 devices. Unlike a lot of the other cumbersome devices, the Excalibur has no touch screen but this makes the battery life significantly better – in fact it has the longest battery life of any Windows Mobile device we’ve ever tested! It really has no bells and whistles, but it functions brilliantly.
