I know, it is painful. The old Hotmail Plus sytem used to help us out with this one, but no more.
You can see why they want to prevent it because if you're not visiting their webmail site, then you're not seeing all their sponsors and advertisers banners which is a big revenue generator, but the flip side is that the likes of Yahoo! and GMail don't have a problem with POP access or mail forwarding rules, so why should the (significantly larger) Microsoft. Greed? I'll let you make your own assumption.
