Thumbs up Upgrading the Excalibur??

Hi

I've got a HTC Excalibur (the S620 model). It had Windows Mobile version 5 on it when I bought it but now I've heard you can upgrade it to version 6. Does anyone know anything about how you do it and how complicated it is? Basically any info before I take a dive woul be great.

Thanks

As you know, the S620 shipped with WM5 Smartphone Edition. HTC released the WM6 update in the last quarter of 2007 and is a free download from their website (I believe you need to enter your IMEI on the site to get the download file).

You connect your device to your PC and run the file on the desktop which will then update the phone (you must have activesync installed). The upgrade takes about 15 minutes to complete and will wipe any data on the handheld, so make sure you backup all your information beforehand.

The upgrade will only run if you have in excess of 50% battery power, so make sure you're well charged up before you start.

That's pretty much it.

Thanks, that's a big help.

One final question, can you use the upgrade from a network on the device. I have a copy of the T-Mobile update to WM6 but my device is not T-Mobile branded?

No. You can't use a network specific ROM on a non branded device (or vice versa). I know whey you're mentioning the T-Mobile ROM, the WM6 update for the Excalibur first came out on the T-Mobile branded MDA unit and as a result there seem to be a lot of copies of it floating around online in various forums.

Do yourself a favour and download the correct version from the HTC website. It's totally free and all you have to do is register with the HTC e-Club; here's a link to it:
