The Samsung D800
I have been using Samsung since the Samsung True eye was launched. I really love Samsung phones, as they are beautiful pieces to own from the N60, N90, T100 to my new D800.
I expected after the successful launch of the V3 RAZR that Samsung's new device should be similarly thin and influenced by the fashion segment.
When I saw the D600 I knew if they launched a new model to compete with the new trendy slim lightweight handsets then its functionality would not exceed Samsung D600.
Looks
I was therefore really happy to find that the D800 remained a sliding phone similar to the 8800 and 8810 by Nokia. Certainly from some angles the D800 looks like the Nokia 8800 to me due to the discreet slider mechanism and chrome plated fringing.
The 9 cm long case is made of black plastic; it is not too glossy, but not matte either. Trace fingerprints can become visible on it but they are not as evident as they are on the panel. The screen is good and looks far cleaner
On the left lateral face there are a couple of volume control keys, the charger and headset socket covered with the Samsung's new type of plastic cap.
On the right lateral face there is the camera button and the slot for the MicroSD cards. The soft keys accessible when the slider is closed are quite comfortable, but the close positioning of the C button under the navigation button can be confusing and make operation difficult.
The keypad of the D800 is constructed as one plate for all the buttons with the contacts located underneath and the white backlight, although not so bright, is clearly visible in full darkness and also quite comfortable to use.
Camera
The Camera in the D800 is located on the rear of the top of the case, and it is necessary to open the device to take photos. Also of note is the small mirror and a separate microphone for sound recording (only in a video mode).
The D800 is equipped with an impressive screen similar to all of today's top models, with a QVGA-resolution of 240x320 pixels (33x44 mm), with a diagonal size of 2.2 inches. It displays up to 262000 colors with a crisp, alive and very bright picture. When comparing screens at identical settings with D600, you will notice that the D800 the display is little bit brighter.
Battery Life
The battery of the higher capacity is not provided and therefore according to the manufacturer the existing pack works for 180 hours in the standby mode and up to 3 hours in the talk mode. I didn't time it, but it takes approximately 1 hr and 30 mins to recharge it.
MMS
One lovely feature is the MMS interface for multimedia messages; the messages can be saved in several folders instantly. There are no size restrictions for messages up to 295 KB. As for additional services, the ability to reject advertising messages, the option of message receipt whilst roaming should be mentioned. The messages are saved in the general memory since there is no special memory for them.
MP3
An integrated mp3 player supporting accidental track reproduction, both sequential and cyclic, is also available on the phone. Mp3 files can be downloaded onto the phone both directly through Bluetooth and through a synchronization program. Files may be of various names and tags and you can record up to several hours of voice memos with an unlimited number of files. The time restrictions for one recording are set by the user and can be up to one hour in duration.
Memory
Up to four MB of memory are available in the phone for various programs. Only two games are preinstalled for the D800 - Bobby Carrot, Time Rider II (although I was expecting more). The Calculator, World time and Alarm clock functions are all nice and simple to use. There is a fun box, which contains all the files such as, music, images, videos and sounds. Additionally all downloaded files are also stored here.
The presence of Picsel Viewer is one of the main strengths of the model. Picsel Viewer is an application capable of opening MS Office files (for instance, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat (PDF), graphical and video formats on the phone. The viewer is impressively fast, opening a 20 MB PDF file in a couple of seconds, then allowing you to quickly scroll, scale and rotate different pages.
Over all I think this model is a tester for the coming one, which I am expecting at the end of summer 2006. The company is the leader by sales in the sliding phone segment and I think it is possible to predict a successful destiny for this model as well.
